Working with guipure lace

Guipure is a corded embroidery worked on a ground that is then dissolved away, so the motif stands proud and holds its shape without a net backing. That is what separates it from the softer laces sold under the same name.

It has a right side and a directional scalloped edge, which changes how it is cut. Tell your tailor before they lay the pattern, because a scallop placed at the hem of an agbada is the detail people notice first.

Guipure is normally cut over a lining in a matching or contrasting tone. Buy the lining at the same time so the two are matched under the same light rather than from memory.

All eleven shades here are four yard cuts. If you need more than one cut for an agbada and trouser set, order them together so the embroidery repeat lines up across the pieces.
